Property for sale in Majones, Huesca, Aragon
0 Bedroom Mansion
Price: 316000 EUR
This house is where priests used to stay when they offered their services in the villages of the region, Villareal, Fago, Lorbes and Majones.
The property was known for arable and animal farming, offering farmwork to all men from the area, and controlled a large part of the economy in the area.
The family had a large religious commitment, housing and feeding the monks and curates who visited the parish.
During the Civil War, some deserters of the Republican army attacked the house, with the intention of robbing it for food and money. As only the women and Grandfather Alberto Samitier were there, they were unable to keep the robbers out and they took several valuable objects, money and various animals to hide out in the hills above Fago.
To humiliate the women the robbers wanted to burn the solid wooden saint which the family worshipped and was kept in the grandfather’s bedroom. But the old man surprised them with his courage, ripping open his shirt and offering up his chest for them to slit open rather than have them burn the image.
The robbers argued among themselves and decided not to burn the statue and went off with the loot. However, as they left, one ran back to the house, charged up the stairs and furiously ripped the arms from the saint, returning afterwards to his partners in crime.
A week later, vultures discovered their bodies in the Foz de Fago where they had walked over a cliff and died.
In the heart of the quiet mountain village of Majones this stone house has been in the Samitier family since the XVII century and, unsurprisingly, has a rich history and the furniture and items within it easily take us back to days gone by when things were made with patience and care.
The village of Majones is situated very close to the Yesa Reservoir, and the Anso, Roncal and Hecho valleys in the Aragon Pyrenees. It’s only 35 minutes from Jaca and the Aragon Valley with the ski resorts of Astún and Candanchu, and the French border.
The house offers many possibilities for use as a place of rest and inspiration to writers, musicians or painters along with restoring the cottages which could, in total, comfortably sleep 15 to 20 people.
There is a young Englishman living locally who carries out restoration work on properties such as these, preserving them with care and harmony. He could be trusted with the job of restoring them to their former glory, leaving them totally habitable and ready to be enjoyed once again.
