Morris dancing - Alive and jingling in Hastings

12th February 2009 Print
Recent reports in the media have suggested the demise of Morris dancing throughout England. This certainly isn’t the case in Hastings, East Sussex! To see Morris dancing alive and jingling, the Jack in the Green Festival is the place to be during Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of May.

This annual festival is a veritable feast of Morris dancing, with teams from all over Europe and England invited by Hastings’ own troops, Mad Jack’s Morris and Hannah’s Cat.

The weekend’s non-stop festivities culminate on the 4 May in a colourful procession of dance, music, and fire-eating through the streets of the picturesque Old Town of Hastings. The Jack is released from the Fishermens’ Museum and, accompanied by his Bogies and the Giants, he processes up to Hastings Castle where the Jack is slain and the spirit of Summer is released.
