No-one here at The White Swan Inn will bark at the dog – in fact, far from it, for this is one of the few and increasingly scarce dog-friendly hotels where canine friends are warmly welcomed along with their human owners! And this is where the expression ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ could be fairly said to be true of the owners’ philosophy: guests’ needs and requirements, whatever they are, come first while they are resident at the noted White Swan Inn, situated in the centre of the old market town of Pickering in North Yorkshire – and accompanying dogs come a close second!

“Dogs are part of daily life”, say owners Victor & Marian Buchanan, who are also happy to arrange for dog-owners to take along their pooches on any shooting parties that are arranged for their guests while at the Inn.

“We are very pleased to welcome guests’ dogs to our hotel in the bars and lounges, and just as we take the utmost care over their owners’ requirements, so too, do we ensure that their dogs are properly catered for while they are with us, with dog bowls of water freely available in the bar and terrace areas. The only place where dogs are not permitted is in the restaurant so they do have to ‘lie doggo’ for a while, but owners are welcome to leave them in their rooms while they dine with us. “
