Barratt's tallest building to date gets the ‘green' treatment

Barratt's tallest building to date gets the ‘green' treatment The Elektron, Barratt's latest development in London Docklands, has been fitted with wind turbines and solar energy collectors to make a renewable contribution to its energy needs. Each of the three towers at The Elektron has been provided with a 2.5 kilowatt wind turbine and a 2 kilowatt photo-voltaic (PV) solar panel array. The combined renewable energy generated by both systems across all three towers is expected to exceed 20,000 kilowatt-hours per year, resulting in a total carbon emissions saving of 11.5 tonnes per annum.

The Elektron - now nearing completion at Leamouth, near Canary Wharf - has already been fitted with an environmentally-friendly communal heating system producing almost 30 per cent less carbon emissions than a comparable conventional system.

The base heating and hot water provision at Elektron is via a combined heat and power (CHP) system, supplemented by highly-efficient gas-fired boilers. This CHP engine generates electricity and produces hot water as a by-product. Key to the efficiency of the system is a massive steel vessel capable of storing 45,000 litres of hot water, built into the lowest levels of the building.

The combined contributions of the CHP and rooftop renewable generators result in reduced household bills for residents of The Elektron.

Barratt East London managing director Alastair Baird said: "It's a very big scheme and we felt we could take the opportunity to exceed the environmental targets laid down by the Greater London Authority. We've chosen tried and tested green technologies and are very pleased with the way they are making a contribution to the sustainability of The Elektron."

The Elektron is a centrepiece of the regeneration of Leamouth. Comprising three towers rising to a maximum 25 storeys, it contains over 435 apartments and is the tallest Barratt structure yet built.

Designed for Barratt by the award-winning Formation Architects, it includes new open spaces for use by residents, two exclusive health and fitness suites, plus commercial space.

The homes at The Elektron have fully-fitted designer kitchens, complete with integrated appliances, and family and en suite bathrooms, with most apartments having balconies from which to enjoy the views. Lifts serve all floors through stylish common areas and there is some private parking for residents. There is a daytime concierge service.

As well as being convenient for Canary Wharf, the City and nearby City Airport, this part of Docklands has excellent rail communications with the City and central London. In fact, The Elektron has its own pedestrian link with East India Dock DLR station.

Currently available at the The Elektron are one-bedroom apartments from £287,500 and £399,000 for two-bedroom apartments, located on the 15th floors and offering spectacular views over London and the Thames. A pair of top floor penthouses are available from £899,995.

A fully equipped marketing suite is open, complete with show apartments – visit Barratthomes.co.uk for more information.
