Housebuilder and school create eco-Christmas tree

10th December 2008 Print
A new homes development and school in Upton, Northampton, have joined forces to build a truly ‘green' Christmas tree - one that is built of recycled materials. Barratt Northampton's NU@D2 and the Upton Meadow Primary School, who both incorporate eco-features within their homes and building, created the five foot tree during December.

Barratt's site manager, Jim Wilkinson, organised the building of the tree structure from offcuts of sustainable wood. And NU@D2 residents offered recycled rubbish, from plastic bottles to egg boxes, to be used to create Christmas decorations.

A class of 32, five and six year olds, were then asked to create the decorations - and they all got into the spirit of the occasion.

Head teacher, Helen Hollwey, said: "The children were very excited to be involved in a project with Barratt and they are looking forward to seeing the decorated tree in the sales office."

The Christmas tree, complete with eco, low-energy lights, will be decorated on Wednesday (10th December) and will form a unique centrepiece in the sales centre for Barratt sales negotiator Karen Heath.

Karen said: "When its here, residents are keen to pop in and add to the decorations - the children love it.

"It's all about having some fun, being creative, and thinking about a ‘greener' Christmas - what better way than with an eco-Christmas tree."

Homes at NU@D2 incorporate solar panels to supply hot water, PV panels to generate electricity, and ‘living' roofs, made of sedum, to help with storm water runoff.

To see the eco-Christmas tree, visit the sales office in the Weedon Road, open Wednesday - Sunday, 11.00am - 6.00pm.
