Bonhams breaks £13.6 million sales at Goodwood Revival

An all-time high of 146,000 attendees at last weekend’s Goodwood Revival was not the only record broken at the annual historic motor racing event, as Goodwood’s long-time auction partner Bonhams achieved its best-ever Revival sale of collectors’ motor cars and automobilia.
 
Bonham’s combined sales of significant cars at this year’s two Goodwood motor sport events – the Revival and Festival of Speed - achieved a phenomenal record of £36.6 million.
 
Highlights of the Bonhams mid-September Revival sale included the gavel falling at over £2.8 million for the totally original, unrestored 1928 Mercedes-Benz 36/220 6.8-litre, owned by the same family since new.  A fine collection of early Maseratis achieved £2.88 million, while the ex-Works 1939 Lagonda V12 Le Mans team car realised almost £1.3 million, a record for the marque.
 
The much-talked about full-scale Aston Martin DBR1 ‘Airfix’ kit was one of the most photographed attractions at the 2012 Goodwood Revival, with this unique artwork selling for £27,500.
 
Goodwood has proved to be an exceptional venue for Bonhams in 2012, with June’s Festival of Speed sale achieving £5 million for the Birkin Bentley – the most expensive British car ever sold at auction – as well as £4.7 million for the 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost that inspired the famous Corgi model of this motor car.
 
Confirmed dates for the Bonhams motor car and automobilia auctions at the 2013 Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed have yet to be finalised, but these will be announced once the event dates are confirmed in the coming weeks. Tickets for the 2013 Goodwood motor sport events go on sale on Thursday 1st November.
