Blistex launches revolutionary new Cold Sore Cream

14th November 2012 Print

Blistex, the trusted daily lip care brand, is launching a brand new cold sore treatment - Blistex Cold Sore Cream - which is set to revolutionise the market and bring much needed relief to millions of cold sore sufferers in the UK.

Already the number one selling cold sore treatment in the US, docosanol, the unique active ingredient in Blistex Cold Sore Cream, will now be available in the UK for the first time. It works differently to every other cold sore treatment on the market, helping to block the spread of the virus when applied at first tingle and making sure you can carry on with life as normal.

With a whopping 70% of the UK population suffering from cold sores, and around 70% of these stating that they would be keen to try an alternative treatment, there is clearly demand for a new product. This is where Blistex can help, by introducing a unique, effective and affordable cold sore cream, which will be available over the counter at pharmacies from August.

We know that cold sore sufferers worry as much about the appearance of the blister as the pain or discomfort, which is why Blistex Cold Sore Cream, when applied at first tingle, effectively penetrates the skin to help block the virus from entering healthy cells.

Published scientific journal reports4 have shown that docosanol starts working earlier in the cold sore cycle than other active ingredients by forming a barrier around the cell which stops the virus from entering in the first place. Current treatments on the market contain anti-virals such as aciclovir and penciclovir, which only start to work once the cold sore virus has entered the healthy cells.

While busy lifestyles make it hard for sufferers to avoid the triggers of a cold sore such as stress, tiredness, ill health and poor diet, Blistex Cold Sore Cream now offers a powerful new way to fight back against the virus. Clinically proven to help heal cold sores, Blistex Cold Sore Cream also effectively moisturises and protects lips to keep them looking gorgeous all year round, so there’s no need to hide away from the world when you’re suffering with a cold sore.

Dr Charles Zugerman, dermatologist and Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Northwestern University Medical School says: “We all know that cold sores can be painful and leave sufferers feeling embarrassed or self-conscious. The best way to combat them is to apply a treatment which gets to work as early as possible to help block the virus. As the leading active ingredient in the USA, Docosanol has set the standard for cold sore treatment, so I would encourage all cold sore sufferers try it for themselves now that it is available in Blistex Cold Sore Cream from pharmacists in the UK.”

Blistex Cold Sore Cream, available from mid-September 2012, is priced at £6.99.
