7 million Brits planned to cash in on rewards this summer

16th September 2013 Print

Seven million Brits planned to redeem rewards they earned on Credit or Charge cards, according to research from American Express. Over a third (34 per cent) of Brits - who have a rewards based credit or charge card said they would be using these rewards to help ease the cost of their summer holidays. Twenty per cent were more likely to take a holiday abroad while 10 per cent said they could now enjoy a ‘staycation' in the UK.

While some planned to use their rewards to get away, the annual Passive Plastic research from American Express highlights that on a day-to-day basis, rewards are used in a variety of ways. Four in 10 Brits redeem them to ease the cost of everyday living and 22 per cent plan to treat themselves in the coming months. Family entertainment also remains a priority, as 17 per cent use rewards to keep the family amused during the school holidays.

Nicholas Stefanovitz, Vice President of Consumer Card Acquisition UK at American Express, said: "With the end of the school holidays in sight, families are now dealing with the after effects of the extra costs of holidays and days out, so it's encouraging to see people planned ahead for the summer and aimed to redeem their rewards points to help with costs for their summer getaway or for their daily spending. For those who have not tried credit or charge cards that offer rewards on spending but are already planning their next holiday, there's never been a better time to switch to plastic that helps you to save while you spend."
