New homes planned for former hospital site

Plans for 172 new homes will revitalise the site of an historic former hospital in Kent.

Preston Hall on London Road, Aylesford, was used during the First World War as a facility to treat wounded troops and later as a chest speciality hospital. The land has been bought by Redrow Homes (South East) after the NHS declared the site surplus to requirements.

The historic Preston Hall itself has been sold on to another developer and the listed building will be refurbished to provide apartments. Subject to detailed planning permission, Redrow will build a range of traditional-style family homes within the grounds.

Chris Sparks, land director for Redrow Homes (South East), said: “We acquired the former hospital site with the benefit of outline planning permission for 172 new homes on a 24.9 acre parcel of land. We’re looking forward to developing the land to provide a good choice of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes. The masterplan respects the existing open space, which has been incorporated into the design, and we will be looking to retain a significant number of mature trees and open space as part of this prestigious development.”

The new homes will benefit from good local amenities and excellent transport links to Maidstone and M20.

The venture will be adjacent to the Heart of Kent Hospice, which has been chosen as the charity of the year for Redrow Homes (South East).

Chris added: “At Redrow we don’t just build homes, we want to play an active part in the communities in which we operate. With that in mind we’ve chosen the Heart of Kent Hospice as our charity of the year and will be fundraising for them throughout 2014. As part of the development, Redrow will be carrying out upgraded highway works, which will benefit the Heart of Kent Hospice and the Royal British Legion Industries site. “
