The technology that keeps your home running

20th June 2014 Print

Running a home is a daunting task. Granted, it is not as complicated and technical as running an oil mine where you’ll need submersible slurry pumps or oil minder pump systems, it is still a time-consuming and resource-depleting endeavor. Ask any parent who has to wake up early to prepare breakfast for the kids, do some house chores, go to the office, run by the grocery store before going home, cook some dinner, and get everyone to bed, all in the space of a 24-hour day. It’s a good thing there are various technologies to ensure that everything around the house is working efficiently and effectively.

Electricity and electric appliances

Electricity is the most important technology that makes everything possible. It powers the oven and the stoves for cooking meals, the washing machine and drier for doing the laundry, and the refrigerator to keep cooked meals and preserve fresh food. It powers the light that makes working even at night possible. It powers the television, the computer, the tablet, and the phone, to keep the pesky children busy while the parent is doing house chores. It is the be-all and end-all of modern conveniences.

Climate control

Some companies offer home solutions that answer specific needs to keep the house running in order. Climate control solutions enable users to manage and control the air conditioner during warm and humid days, or the heater during the winter months. This technology enables home owners to effectively manage the temperature inside the house and in each room. Aside from the thermostat and the air-conditioner, this technology enables users to control the movement of window blinds and shades, closing them during midday to escape the sun, or opening them in the morning to let the sunlight in.

Security system

Security is of the utmost concern for any homeowner. The home is vulnerable to various risks including fires, explosions, theft, and trespassing. Investing in a good security system will keep our minds at ease as to the security of the home and the safety of the people within its walls. Security technologies include fire alarms, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, trespassing alarms, and even surveillance cameras. Fire alarms and smoke detectors can be configured to alert, not just the residents, but also the local authorities such as the fire station and local police station. Trespassing alarms can be set up with a security firm that can also provide assistance in terms of an actual break-in. Some security systems have a mechanism to check whether the alarms have only been tripped accidentally. Surveillance cameras can be set up in various locations inside the house and around it, and can be monitored using a CCTV system, or a mobile application that can be checked from a cellphone or computer.

Energy

Lastly, energy management systems enable homeowners to conserve energy in terms of electricity. Less electric consumption means lower electric bills. Some energy conservation technologies include energy-efficient lamps, energy-efficient air conditioners, and motion sensors to determine whether or not to turn a light on or off, depending on whether there is someone in the room. These technologies contribute in maintaining an efficient and effective home.
