Personal spending habits cause friction in over a third of relationships

1st September 2014 Print

How much you spend could have an impact on your relationship, according to a report into spending behavior commissioned by cashback and rewards site Quidco, that revealed that over one in three (38 per cent) of coupled up Brits argue about how much money is being spent by their partners.

The belief that their partner spends too much fuels a quarter (25 per cent) of couples to argue, with a long suffering nine per cent revealing they have to bail them out, while the other 17 per cent refuse to offer support.

Conversely, 12 per cent of Brits admit they are the ones in hot water when it comes to spending, with their partners thinking that they should spend less.

Andy Oldham, MD of cashback and rewards site Quidco, said: “How you spend the money you earn is ultimately your choice, but if you do find yourself sneaking a pair of shoes or the latest game into the house because you are feeling guilty about treating yourself, it might be partly because it’s an impulse purchase that deep down you know you don’t really need.

“One way to counteract buyers’ remorse is to take the time to research those little must-have treats that you do actually want – like a new perfume, a shirt for your next night out or the latest PS4 title. Reward sites aren’t just for big purchases, and with high street retailers like ASOS, Boots, and Game offering cashback, you can save some money while you spend to help fund your purchase. Thoughtful buying is the new impulse buying for savvy shoppers.”
