A brand new link road in Colchester, Essex, was launched in style with a prestigious VIP event hosted by leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey.

Roberts Road, which links Military Road and Mersea Road through the former Hyderabad Barracks, was officially opened by Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell and local school children on Wednesday 12th November.

Other local dignitaries in attendance included the Deputy Mayor of Colchester, local Borough Councillor Theresa Higgins, Councillor Margaret Fisher, The Rev Ian Hilton, and Father Andrew Phillips, who met at Taylor Wimpey’s Praecedo Sales and Marketing Suite in Mersea Road before the event.

Roberts Road is named after distinguished 19th century Army leader Lord Roberts VC whose centenary of his death was just two days after the official re-opening of the road bearing his name (14th November 1914).

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell says: “I am grateful to Taylor Wimpey for being so supportive in not only keeping the historic name but also inviting me to perform the official opening.

“This is a well-laid out housing development on the former Hyderabad Barracks, and I know it will be a popular place for people to live.

“The tree-lined avenue of Roberts Road, linking Mersea Road and Military Road, will help ease traffic problems in this part of Colchester – and will reduce through-traffic using the St George’s area of New Town Ward.

“And we now have a magnificent new vista: the white painted timber former Garrison Church, now used as a Russian Orthodox Church, looks even more impressive than ever as one approaches it going eastwards along Roberts Road to the junction with Military Road.”

Five pupils from St George’s New Town Junior School helped Sir Bob to cut the ribbon, to mark Roberts Road as officially open.

Headteacher Carl Messer says: “It was lovely to watch the children take an active role in the opening of part of their own community. They were interested in the origins of the 'Roberts Road' name, and the reasons for opening this link route through our local area.”

Michael O’Leary, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, who also attended the launch, says: “We were delighted to have held the official launch of Roberts Road.

“The new road is great news for local people and homebuyers at our Praecedo and Brigadier House developments, reducing traffic on surrounding roads to make this area even more peaceful and pleasant.

“The official opening was a huge success, and we’d like to thank everyone who attended.”

There’s a superb selection of high-quality properties currently available at Praecedo, including stylish two-bedroom coach houses from £160,995, two-bedroom houses from £185,995, spacious three-bedroom homes from £220,995 and four-bedroom designs from only £262,995.

Alternatively, there’s just one plot left at the neighbouring newly-restored Brigadier House development – a superb three-bedroom mews house, priced at just £289,995.

Brigadier House retains its impressive Edwardian frontage and its striking interior includes a stunning chandelier hanging over the ornate communal staircase.

Praecedo – which means to surpass or excel in Latin, in a nod to Colchester’s famous Roman heritage – is a collection of high-quality properties in a well-connected yet peaceful location overlooking the cricket ground in Mersea Road, with the tranquil open space of Abbey Field beyond.
