A ground-breaking ceremony has been held to mark the beginning of works at Taylor Wimpey’s forthcoming South Sebastopol development near Cwmbran, paving the way for the first new homes to be released for sale in the coming months.

The first turf was cut by Cllr Bob Wellington CBE, Leader of Torfaen County Borough Council, at a celebratory event held on Tuesday 12th April at the site, off Bevans Lane, Cwmbran, and attended by a host of VIPs.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed refreshments and the chance to speak to staff from Taylor Wimpey South Wales and find out more about the leading housebuilder’s plans for this brand new mixed-use development, including 1,200 new homes.

Reserved matters approval for the first phase of development at South Sebastopol, comprising 210 homes, was granted by Torfaen County Borough Council in January.

Ben Thomas, South Sebastopol Project Manager for Taylor Wimpey, says: “The cutting of the first sod and the beginning of preliminary works at South Sebastopol signals another step forward for this prestigious new neighbourhood, and the first homes will be under construction very soon.

“We were delighted to welcome Cllr Wellington CBE and other local dignitaries to this landmark event and were pleased to give them the chance to find out more about how the plans for our flagship development will come to fruition over the coming years.”

South Sebastopol will deliver an integrated, sustainable and attractive new neighbourhood as the natural extension to Sebastopol and Cwmbran, set within attractive parkland around a picturesque stretch of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

The development will include a proportion of affordable properties which will give local residents and key workers the opportunity to enjoy life in a brand new home within their own community, while Taylor Wimpey will be making significant financial contributions towards improving facilities in the local area.

The overall masterplan for the development includes a village centre, sustainable transport links including a new bus route through the development, sports pitches and changing facilities, play areas, cycle and leisure trails and extensive areas of green open space, including woodland and conservation grassland.
