Every goal counts for Combo winner!

29th April 2006 Print
There was one football fan who certainly wasn’t as sick as a parrot at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show.

Truck Driver David Proverbs left the NEC with the keys to a brand new Vauxhall Combo in his pocket, after fighting off much younger competition in a penalty shoot-out organised in conjunction with Talksport radio.

Proverbs, along with fellow Talksport listeners Ben Watts and Gary Vines, were winners in a phone-in show run by the station, which is sponsored by Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles.

They were invited to the CV Show at the NEC, where they each had three shots on-goal to try and beat Talksport presenter Adrian Durham in goal, and after burying two of his three shots in the back of the net, 50-year old Proverbs lived up to his name by saying: “Experience is worth more than enthusiasm!”

The Sheffield Wednesday fan, who lives in Nottingham, added: “I’ve never owned a new vehicle before, and I haven’t even kicked a ball in 15 years. Maybe I should dust off my boots and take up Sunday League again!”

Proverbs says his new Combo will come in handy for his work, as the 1.3 CDTi Combo’s spacious load bay and economical powerplant are perfect for making deliveries to places where his lorry won’t fit.

The two runners-up didn’t leave empty handed, as both received a VIP ticket package to join Vauxhall at any round of this year’s British Touring Car Championship.
