Hinton Manor: Equestrian excellence

31st July 2007 Print
Hinton Manor Hinton Manor, formerly the home of racehorse owner Michael Talbot-Ponsonby and his family, is being offered for sale by Carter Jonas for the first time in 40 years.

Hinton Manor is a Grade II listed seven-bedroom manor house which dates from the 17th century. At the time of the English Civil War, though the house was just a simple cottage, it was used as a local Roundhead headquarters.

The Talbot-Ponsonby family has a long equestrian history. Col. Jack Talbot-Ponsonby show jumped for Great Britain in the 1936 Olympic Games in Munich, after which he was Chef d’Equipe for a number of years. Michael Talbot Ponsonby was a racehorse owner and a keen huntsman, hunting with both the Warwickshire and the Heythrop until 1995.

Hinton Parva and the surrounding area is popular with anyone with an interest in horses and horse racing, being close to the racing centre at Lambourn and offering easy access to racecourses at Bath, Newbury and Cheltenham. Neighbours of the Talbot-Ponsonbys have included Richard and Jenny Pitman and David Tatlow.

Hinton Manor is in need of some modernisation, but offers a unique opportunity for the creation of a wonderful family home. The property retains a wealth of period features, including an impressive panelled entrance hall and panelled and part-panelled reception rooms.

Set in grounds of over 22 acres, with a well-established walled garden, disused tennis court and paddocks, the property is located on the edge of the hamlet of Hinton Parva, adjacent to the Grade I listed St Swithun’s Church. Numerous outbuildings, including stables, a barn and a self-contained cottage, offer further development potential, subject to receiving the necessary consents.

Hinton Parva is well-located for some excellent schools, including Pinewood Preparatory School, Marlborough College and St Mary’s Calne. Swindon lies just 6 miles to the west, with train services to London taking approximately 1 hour.

David Eckersley, the partner at Carter Jonas handling the sale, believes
“Hinton Manor’s location is perfect for those who wish to be close to major horseracing centres and those people who need to commute to London on a regular basis. It also offers the opportunity to modernise and customise a beautiful house to individual tastes.”

Hinton Manor is on the market with a guide price of £1.8m. For more information on the property, visit caterjonas.co.uk.
