Redrow Homes’ donation of over £4,000 to the successful side will go towards developing the club – including the building of a new club house – and buying new kit for the club’s first team.

The newly promoted side, known as ‘The Pitmen’ due to the formation of the club by men who worked at Penallta Colliery, play their home matches at Ystrad Fawr, close to Redrow’s Cwm Calon development in Ystrad Mynach.

Matthew Tucker, club captain for Penallta’s first team, says: “Redrow’s sponsorship is a great help to us – without the backing of our generous sponsors, we would not be able to operate as a successful rugby club. Our aims this year are the same as they have been for the last three years – to stay in the top four all season and gain promotion at the end of it.”

The club, which has been running for nearly 50 years, also has a second team, two youth teams and is a father club to a mini rugby section in the area. Matthew adds: “It’s a big ask for us to gain promotion again but it is definitely achievable. We only joined the Welsh Rugby Union three years ago and we have gained promotion every year since and hopefully this year will be no different.”

Debby Pavitt, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (South Wales) says: “Redrow is always looking for new ways to get involved in the communities in which we build. We are proud to be associated with Penallta rugby club and wish them every success for the new season.”

Redrow development Cwm Calon is part of a large regeneration project in Ystrad Mynach, near Caerphilly, aimed at bringing employment and investment to the area. The new homes form part of the regeneration of the former Penallta Colliery into a vibrant urban village environment, with the award winning home builder creating stylish new homes plus a school, employment and recreational facilities.

Penallta will play their first game in the Division Two East at home to Treherbert on September 1st.
