New Turbo Dynamics ‘Twinscroll’ Turbo under development

Turbo Dynamics Twinscroll Turbo One of the world’s leading turbocharger specialists, Turbo Dynamics (TD) has announced that the company’s been working on a new ‘twinscroll’ or twin entry turbo over the last eight months. A new Turbo Dynamics turbo is exciting news and some orders have already been placed with TD partner, Litchfield Imports who will be exclusively selling the turbo, following its completion, in early 2009.

Turbo Dynamics was established in 1991 and since then has grown to become a massive name within the hybrid turbocharger market. The company is well known for its employees’ technical knowledge, design and blueprinting skills. Last year TD launched the hybrid MD555 turbocharger, which true to form became a huge success and is now known as ‘The Ultimate Subaru Turbo’. The MD555 has given impressive power readings with one Dyno graph registering 618.5bhp.

Like the popular MD555, the new TD twin entry turbo has been designed for use on Subaru Imprezas. Subaru specialist, Litchfield Imports has been designing a bespoke car based on the latest 2008 Impreza STI model and approached TD requesting that the two companies pair up and jointly design a powerful hybrid twin entry turbo using their combined knowledge. The turbo was to be used on Litchfield’s new Type-20 car.

Turbo Dynamics were keen to help and both the resulting turbo and car are jaw-dropping. - Despite the fact that the turbo itself is still being made, Litchfield Imports have already received numerous orders for the turbocharged car from dedicated racers and Subaru enthusiasts.

Peter Marsh, Turbo Dynamics Managing Director, said the latest news on the twin entry turbo is that the tooling is being machined for both the turbine housing and the compressor housing.

The ceramic coated hybrid turbo has been designed as a bolt-on replacement for the JDM Twinscroll cars and will support a power range of 380bhp to 500+bhp. It has been created with the latest computer design software and experienced British engineering. Iain Litchfield, Litchfield Imports Director, explained that his plan was to offer a turbo option to suit all of his customers’ needs.

The combination of the specially designed twin entry turbo by Turbo Dynamics and the Litchfield-modified Subaru engine in the Type-20 means that the car’s torque range will be an impressive 3,400rpm through to a heady maximum power of 7,500rpm. Litchfield has said “These amazing headline numbers don’t do the power delivery justice with 414Nm (300lbft) available at 3,000 rpm and 345bhp at 5,400rpm, which gives the Type-20 a massive window of useable power. Nothing similar on the market comes close.”

Director Iain Litchfield explained: “Key to the superb power delivery is our newly developed twin entry turbo. Working closely with Turbo Dynamics, our technical partners, we have been able to produce our own advanced casting that not only maintains the spool up characteristics of the standard turbo, but also the airflow of a much larger unit.

“Performance figures only hint at the real world pace that the Type-20 possesses. 0-60mph can be dispatched in 3.9 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 165mph.”
