Enthralling Ethiopia

29th September 2009 Print

Walking through the dramatic mountains of Ethiopia, visiting the Blue Nile Falls and taking a boat trip on Lake Tana provides some of the best scenery in Africa, and the cities are just as fascinating.

The twentieth century briefly saw the capital city, Addis Ababa, occupied by the Italians leaving an intriguing mix of luxurious Italian architecture with bustling markets and goats wandering the streets. Visit the National Museum to see ‘Lucy’ the replica of the famous remains of the earliest known human descendant and Axum, once a great city controlled by the Queen of Sheba.

A sight not to be missed is the small town of Lalibela, with an extraordinary collection of churches chiselled from solid rock. Local legend dictates that these churches were built by angels in a single night. Ethiopia is a country of spellbinding ancient history and warm, friendly people.

The 14 day escorted “Ethiopian Explorer” tour starts from £1045 per person, including 13 nights accommodation (11 nights hotels or guesthouses, two nights camping in Simien Mountains), most meals and internal transport (private bus, 4WD vehicles, boat and plane).
