On The Road - Jack Kerouac

Create your own piece of American history and take to the USA highways with specialist operator TrekAmerica as the movie version of On The Road hits the big screen.

Filming of the long-awaited adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic autobiographical novel of 1950s teenage life and travels across mid-America started last week, with Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst and Sam Riley among the starring cast. The film will include shooting in New Orleans, Mexico and Montreal, and is already being tipped as one of the top movies of 2011.

Just as On The Road traces the coast-to-coast journeys of a group of teenagers, TrekAmerica offers east to west adventures for young travellers with a comprehensive selection of cross-country itineraries.

In fact, the company’s passion for the ‘Great America Road Trip’ has been its driving force since its formation in 1972. Its cross-country itineraries range from 16 to 64 days, camping or lodging en route and taking in big cities, small towns, and some of America’s most outstanding sights, attractions and experiences.

Cross Country and Route 66, 16 days
One of TrekAmerica’s most popular itineraries, this runs from west to east, linking San Francisco and Chicago. Highlights include the Grand Canyon, following Route 66, city tours of San Francisco and Las Vegas, sightseeing in Denver, Monument Valley and Yosemite, plus scenic walks and hikes.
Departs in 2010: 23 August, 6 September; from San Francisco

Southern Sun, 21 days
Combine eastern energy with the slower pace of the Deep South with this tour, still pulling in travellers after more than 30 years of operating. It kicks off in New York and finishes in LA - or vice versa - by way of Tennessee, Alabama, New Orleans, Texas and Las Vegas. Big moments? How about an illumination tour of Washington DC monuments, New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, the Grand Canyon and alien-spotting in Roswell.
Departs in 2010: More than 25 departure dates until mid-October; more dates available in 2011; from New York and Los Angeles

Americana Road Trip, 28 days

Louisville, Nashville, Oklahoma, Santa Fe, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe are some of the stars en route, while also on the menu are a Niagara Falls Maid of the Mist cruise, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, the Grand Canyon, city sightseeing and tours, and an opportunity to walk the Golden Gate Bridge.
