Islanders from the Caribbean isle of Dominica will be stepping out in celebration later this month to mark progress in the development of a unique national trail.

The Waitukubuli National Trail will run for 115 miles from the south to the north of 'The Nature Island' when fully opened next year. Meanwhile, on August 29, a Summer Adventure and Hike Media Event is set to highlight to both Dominicans and visitors to the island the project and its importance to the tourism economy.

This family fun day is also designed to highlight the ongoing work of the Waitukubuli National Trail Project (WNTP) and stimulate further public support. Catering to all levels of fitness, it will feature a series of races and fun activities, including challenges for the young, seniors and the avid/serious hiker.

The closing event will include presentation by key project personnel, a prize-giving to outstanding performers and live entertainment by Fanatik Band and Club DVD Sounds. The WNTP billboard will also be unveiled.

When completed, the Waitukubuli National Trail will be the first and only long-distance walking trail in the Caribbean. Funded by the European Union and the government of Dominica, it is divided into 14 sections. This will enable hikers to complete one section per day, thus covering the entire trail in two weeks.

Some sections of the trail are already complete and work is continuing to get the entire route open.
