All in the detail: finish a room with coordinated items

Create the ‘wow’ factor in your home with top tips from Star of ITV’s 60 Minute Makeover and professional designer, Derek Taylor.

The TV star, who was recently responsible for creating the sensational showhomes at Taylor Wimpey’s Lysaght Village development in Newport, is now giving his expert advice on how to emulate a stylish décor in your home.

Follow Derek’s top tips and create a home that will be the envy of your friends.

1. Inspiration: Look at interior design magazines to get inspiration and ideas on current trends.

2. Hotel Chic: emulate a cosmopolitan city hotel and create a sensational bedroom using oversized headboards, low lighting and sumptuous fabrics.

3. Fit for a King: Create a bed fit for a king by covering your existing divan base in the same fabric as the headboard. Armed with a staple gun and just a few minutes of time you’ll have a designer bed in no time.

4. Looking Glass: Create the feeling of extra space and light using mirrors. Perfect for any room mirrors instantly make a room look bigger and brighter. For a real ‘wow’ factor create a mirrored wall – it works especially well in hallways.

5. Fashion Forward: Keep a close eye on catwalk trends and the fashion industry ready to reflect styles, trends, patterns and fabrics in interior design. So look at fashion mags and get a feel for the fabrics, colours and overall style coming through.

6. Splash of Colour: Vibrant colours are great for brightening up a room, but rather than using colour on walls use it in scatter custions, throws and accessories against a neutral backdrop. Not only does this look much nicer, but it also enables you to change your colour scheme easily and cost effectively each season.

7. Perfect Finish: Using the right finishings can make any pair of curtains look like a million dollars, so choose your curtain pole and tie-backs carefully ensuring they complement the rest of your décor.

8. On Trend: This season glass finials, beaded tie backs and feather trims are very on trend and you should never be afraid to mix these combinations.

9. Lighting: Oversized standing lamps are perfect for filling up space in a room as well as creating a warm, homely atmosphere.

10. All in the detail: to really finish a room and give it that showhome style look think about the small details such as vases, candles, table coasters, photos – these are all things that make a house a home and when in keeping with the colour scheme and décor you’ve created they will give it that perfect finishing touch.

The new showhomes at Lysaght Village are available to view and purchase and include the three bedroom Wessex style home and the three bedroom, three storey Gosforth and Harvington style townhouses.
