At the Frankfurt Book Fair, Toshiba demonstrates the many uses of its Android-based multimedia tablet FOLIO 100 for e-book, e-newspaper and other multimedia applications. In order to offer easy access to the e-book platform libreka! directly, and via Toshiba Market Place, Toshiba has partnered with the German Publishers & Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels). The access to libreka! e-book platform together with a new e-book reader application will be available on FOLIO 100 during the fourth quarter of 2010 throughout Europe. Toshiba Europe also announced a cooperation with the Mediengruppe Main-Post. During the fourth quarter of 2010, users of the FOLIO 100 will be able to access e-newspapers of the German publishing house through a dedicated application.

Designed to meet publishing houses’ needs
“Toshiba again proves that FOLIO 100 is one of the most powerful multimedia tablets on the market,” says Marco Perino, General Manager Digital Life Products and Services. “With its powerful processor, support of Flash and the integration of Toshiba Market Place, FOLIO 100 perfectly suits the needs of publishing houses, e-book platform providers, and international, national and regional newspapers.”

libreka! e-book platform is accessible via Toshiba Market Place
Toshiba’s partnership with the German Publishers & Booksellers Association makes several hundred free e-book samples from libreka! available in the Book Place of Toshiba Market Place, an application integrated into FOLIO 100. Users can easily download sample chapters and read them on the newly announced e-book-reader application, and then have the option, with a few clicks, to easily purchase the full version of the e-book. “We are impressed by the FOLIO 100's multimedia functionalities and its intuitive user interface. The partnership with libreka!, the leading e-book platform, creates a compelling user experience. FOLIO 100 customers have the largest choice of German language e-books at their fingertips,“ says Ronald Schild, Managing Director of MVB Marketing- und Verlagsservice des Buchhandels GmbH.

Newspapers from Mediengruppe Main-Post on FOLIO 100
Mineus GmbH is one of the first partners working with Toshiba’s tablet in the e-newspaper business. “The Android-based FOLIO 100 with its 10.1’’ display perfectly suits the needs for e-newspapers,” says Mirko Nedeljkovic, General Manager, Mineus GmbH. “With our new app, we are now able to offer our customers in the publishing industry easy distribution for newspapers and magazines on a powerful Android-based device.”

Mineus provides its e-newspaper app to the Mediengruppe Main-Post. “As we see a strong diversification in the tablet market, it is our goal to offer our content on various platforms – including Android-based devices like FOLIO 100,” says Peter Tischler, member of the executive board of Mediengruppe Main-Post, Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH. “We also believe that the development of content and user-centric business models has to go far beyond the offering of conventional newspapers content and therefore needs powerful devices with a broad feature set.”

Cooperation with publishing houses to offer enriched content
“With the Android based multimedia tablet FOLIO 100 Toshiba is well-positioned as a reliable and experienced partner for the publishing houses”, explains Marco Perino. “FOLIO 100 offers a powerful open platform that is even able to smoothly display enriched multimedia content like videos or animations. It is therefore ideally suited to display e-newspapers or e-books enriched with embedded multimedia applications.”

Future proofed: upcoming spiegel.tv app runs on FOLIO 100
Thanks to its powerful processor FOLIO 100 is even able to cope with sophisticated future multimedia applications which are currently in development by the publishing houses. In September, during dmexco fair in Cologne, SPIEGEL TV showcased a prototype of its planned webTV on the FOLIO 100. “The FOLIO 100 has the power and feature set to run our new video offering”, says Nabil Moghib, SPIEGEL TV. ’spiegel.tv’ is a new approach to present high quality documentaries on the web, with a revolutionary user interface, offering both lean-back television and comfortable navigation.
