21st century Roman bathhouse opens in Italy

Borgo Egnazia, positioned to become one of the leading luxury spa resorts in Italy, is proud to announce the official opening of Egnathia Spa.

The final opening phase of the Resort in May 2011 will see the completion of the eagerly anticipated 1,800m² Egnathia Spa, developed to become the most spectacular embodiment of pampering in the Mediterranean.

At the centre of the Egnathia Spa is a modern interpretation of a Roman bathhouse.  Evoking early traditions of bathing, ancient Roman bathhouses were places for socialising and bathing, and every town in Italy had its own bath complex.  By 300 A.D, the number of Roman baths had increased to over 900.  The new bathhouse at Borgo Egnazia is in a league of its own as the only spa of its kind in the 21st Century.

The 1,800m² Egnathia Spa, designed over two levels, will include seven single treatment rooms, three double treatment rooms, a spa suite with a garden and steam room, a Thai massage room, an infusion bar and a heated indoor pool.  The initial launch of the Spa in the summer of 2010 included the top floor treatment rooms and swimming pool.  The Roman bathhouse on the lower floor, opening in May 2011, will create an oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation, with a yoga studio, salon and gym plus a unique wet area with a Tepidarium (warm room), Calidarium (hot room), Figidarium (cold room), and two Roman bath scrub rooms.

The core principles of the Spa’s signature treatments, Roman Thermae Treatments will focus on ‘purification’ and ‘vitality’.  Upholding these philosophies are a specialist team of dermatologists, massage therapists, hydrotherapists, physiotherapists and nutritionists, each working with guests to develop bespoke programmes and treatments, embodying temperature extremes and the use of water to achieve a sense of wellbeing.  The spa menu will include classic treatments such as the Swedish massage and specialist treatments such as the Golfer’s Massage; exfoliating body treatments using sea salt, lavender and cane sugar; and special treatments for couples.  The team is lead by Spa manager, Patrizia Bortolin who brings with her five years of spa management at several luxury resorts in Italy and Switzerland.

The much anticipated Spring opening of Borgo Egnazia will enhance the growing portfolio of the San Domenico Hotel Group, owned by the Melpignano family.  Along with the Egnathia Spa, Borgo Egnazia’s final official opening will include the OurSpaceChildren’s Club, the Apulian Village; a cooking school and beach club.

Rooms start at €215 in the Hotel at Borgo Egnazia (for two people sharing on B&B).  The Hotel and Villas at Borgo Egnazia opened in 2010 whilst the remaining resort including the Village, OurSpace kid’s club, cooking school, Spa and beach club officially opens in Spring 2011.
