Breeze down to the Tuscan coast this summer

1st June 2011 Print

Refreshing sea breezes are welcome on a hot day, which means the latest new holiday homes from Invitation to Tuscany should be particularly popular this summer.

They are all on the Mediterranean coast, with sparkling sea and sandy beaches on the doorstep. Currently they have plenty of weeks available from now until September, including during the school holidays.

Watch the sun set over the sea and the island of Elba from Casa dei Fichi, a relaxed hillside house sleeping eight, within a walk of the beautifully-preserved little town of Campiglia Marittima, south of Livorno. An open-plan lay-out means there is an easy flow from the impressive kitchen to the welcoming sitting room and out through French doors to the lovely garden with its large patio, pizza oven on a covered terrace and swing under a fig tree. A gorgeous sandy beach is a short drive away. Weekly rental is £1,948 in June and September, £2,208 July and August.

Also in the Livorno region, the beach is only a walk or cycle ride away through pine woods from an old farmhouse surrounded by fields of sunflowers, fruit and olive trees. A simple but spacious and charming wing of Costiera is newly available for up to five people. There are gardens with colourful oleanders and a large terrace for enjoying delicious Tuscan dishes – maybe prepared by the charming Italian owners who can also arrange cookery classes for guests. Rental is £597 per week in June and September, and £714 July and August.

Nearby for groups of up to 12 – and perfect for two families to share – there is an eco-friendly hillside house with sea views just a short drive from the long sandy beach at the Bay of Barati. Newly-restored Bernardino blends perfectly into its natural surroundings and is totally self-sufficient thanks to its water and solar collectors and wind-generated electricity. Spacious and attractively-decorated rooms include two living rooms, and a large and small kitchen. The garden has several furnished outdoor terraces for relaxing or dining and the house is within a short walk of a picturesque medieval village. Rental is £2,182 per week in June and September, and £2,500 July and August.

Further south near Grosseto is a rose-pink single-storey home ten minutes’ drive from pinewood-banked beaches. Torrevecchia sleeps up to ten and is set in beautifully-tended lavender and rose-filled gardens with a swimming pool, mature trees, wide green lawns and a vine-covered pergola for al fresco dining. Rental is £3,376 in June and September, and £3,766 July and August.
