The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism is thrilled to have come in as the number one destination in the Caribbean and Mexico category in the global TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice 2011 listings.

Furthermore, with a population of just over 50,000, the Cayman Islands is also ranked 22 in the top 25 destinations in the world – alongside major cities such as Sydney, Paris and London – and the only country in the Caribbean to have been included in this list.

The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winners are based on millions of real and unbiased reviews and opinions from travellers around the world.

Tripadvisor says "….at Stingray City (actually a sandbar) stingrays swim alongside you in the tranquil waters. Closer to town travellers report finding some of the best massage and spa services anywhere in the Caribbean". No doubt Silver Rain, La Prairie spa at the Ritz-Carlton, features highly among those travellers’ reviews.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Suites, a perennial favourite on Grand Cayman among British visitors, has also been handed a prestigious accolade, this time by Expedia. Expedia has named the property as among the top-ranked hotels on this year’s Expedia Insiders’ Select list. The Insiders’ Select list formally recognises individual hotels worldwide that consistently deliver excellent service, a great overall experience and a notable value. The full list represents only 500 of Expedia’s top-ranked hotels selected from the more than 130,000 properties offered by Expedia, the world’s largest online travel company.

Don McDougall, Regional Manager Europe, Cayman Islands Department of Tourism comments: "We are naturally delighted about these results, not least of all because Cayman is, relatively speaking, diminutive both in population and in size when compared to almost all the other destinations listed. Those who visit us know that we pack a punch that is considerably above our weight when it comes to delivering a quality and diverse tourism experience while remaining refreshingly unspoilt and undeveloped. What makes these awards a real privilege to receive is that the results are all based on real visitor’s experiences and opinions, so it counts tremendously to be ranked so highly against world renowned destinations."
