A first-time buyer and her fiancé have been able to take their first step onto the property ladder after they took advantage of a shared ownership scheme from Rowan Homes to secure their perfect home in Cockernhoe.

Victoria Williams and Shaun Ruffett, both 24, recently moved into their two-bedroom home at Rowan’s Elmtree Avenue development in the Bedfordshire village after using the scheme which offers properties for sale on a part-buy/part-rent basis. This allowed the couple to purchase their new home for just 40 per cent of the price, leaving the remaining 60 per cent to be paid in rent.

Victoria, who was born and bred in Cockernhoe, comments, “Both Shaun and I work at Luton Airport, as a baggage handler and security officer respectively, so location was a key factor for us. We looked around other properties and were left disappointed with the size of some that we saw. However as soon as we walked into this house at Elmtree Avenue we felt like we were really at home and were surprised at how spacious each room is.

“It’s such a convenient development and we’re close to friends, work and family here, with my mum, nan and auntie all living in the village too. Plus when it comes to starting a family I know from first-hand experience that Cockernhoe Primary School is a brilliant place to go to school.”

She continues, “We recognised that we had a limited budget to spend and the shared ownership scheme from Rowan Homes was the perfect way of allowing us to get onto the property ladder. As it’s the first house we’ve ever purchased I kept asking questions but the staff there were ever so helpful and I’m extremely grateful for their help. Nothing was ever too much trouble and I felt like I had a really personalised service.”

Sarah Gower, Rowan Homes’ Sales and Marketing Manager says, “We are delighted to hear that Victoria and Shaun are settling well into their new home at Elmtree Avenue having taken advantage of our shared ownership scheme. This deal is designed exclusively for first time buyers and aims to make the buying process more affordable, which will come as a welcome aid particularly during the current challenging economy.”

She adds, “As a company we are very keen to support first time buyers and hope this scheme, which is also available at a number of our other developments in the region such as our new Barn Fields development in Biggleswade, will help more potential homebuyers take that first step.”
