Barratt Group Chief Executive Mark Clare visited the North East to see for himself the company’s latest range of new homes which are being built at Berry Edge, Consett.

The development is the first in the country to display the new Barratt County Range of homes.

They are the result of extensive consultation with more than 1,000 current and prospective homebuyers and introduce features such as floor-to-ceiling glazed “light pods” and redesigned kitchens with family areas.

Mr Clare viewed the development’s show village and said: “I’m very proud to see the work being done here. These homes further raise the bar of what customers can expect from a new Barratt home.

“We went back to the drawing board to come up with the new designs. The new elements are a direct response from independent focus groups who gave feedback on our designs.

“We have improved floor plans to make space work even more efficiently and added features more commonly associated with higher-priced homes, while remaining outstanding value for money.

“We’re building what the customer wants and we expect the new designs to generate tremendous interest.”

The new range offers the widest choice of brand new housing in Britain today, from first-time buyer homes up to 5-bedroom family houses. The designs blend traditional exteriors with free-flowing interior layouts.

New features include floor-to-ceiling glazed “light pods” which double the amount of window space compared to patio doors and blur the boundary between inside and outside space.

Kitchens have been redesigned, with integrated dining and family areas, and bathrooms have higher specifications and double showers. Top-floor bedrooms in townhouses have higher ceilings than usual and include large rooflights.

The new designs are also 25 per cent more energy efficient than homes built just five years ago and around 40 per cent more energy efficient than those built ten years ago.

They mark the culmination of a three-year programme of investment in build quality, customer service and development layout by the Barratt Group. Nationally, Barratt has 100 sites planned for the new range, which will produce around 10,000 homes.

Berry Edge is located on part of the former Consett steelworks, which closed in 1980, and follows three highly-successful Barratt schemes in the town in the last eight years.

Barratt North East is building a selection of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes from the County Range, priced from £111,500 to £202,495. Nine have already been sold, with three going to first-time buyers.
