Evening primrose oil hope for eczema sufferers?

22nd January 2009 Print
The winter months can be a particularly miserable time for the estimated 15% of children and 5% of adults who suffer with atopic eczema in the UK. Characterised by red, dry and itchy skin, the symptoms of this debilitating condition are worsened by the current cold, wet and windy weather which can trigger the itch-scratch cycle.

Results of a new study reported that 96% of patients with atopic eczema experienced an improvement in symptoms after five months supplementation with evening primrose oil.

The new study included sixty-five patients, aged from baby to sixteen years and over, who were randomly assigned to take either 500mg evening primrose oil capsules or a sunflower oil placebo. The dosage of product was adjusted by age and symptoms were measured at baseline and at monthly intervals.

In the evening primrose group, the intensity and itch was significantly improved by the end of the first month and by the end of month five, 96% of patients had improved compared to only 32% of those in the placebo group.

Results of this study add to an already existing and strong body of evidence supporting the benefits of evening primrose oil for aiding atopic eczema.
