Hit the “Indy” trail

9th May 2008 Print
Next month moviegoers will be flocking to see Harrison Ford suit up for the 4th time with his famed fedora, leather jacket, and bullwhip. For travel geeks like us, the spectacular locations where Indy fights with bad guys are another reason to love the epic.

And judging for the image of Indy’s plane tracing a line across a faded map, we bet Spielberg has a little travel geek in him too! We’re obviously big fans, so we’ve put together our own ‘Indy Trail’, a list of some of the most famous and stunning locations used in the making of each of these great film classics.

Get a summary of airfares to these destinations by using the Kayak.co.uk Trip Ideas section. From there you can easily use the Kayak.co.uk award winning Fare Buzz to get a snapshot of airfare prices to locations from your home airport. See Kayak.co.uk.

•Egypt
Where else would one find the Arc of the Covenant but in the sands outside Cairo? (And where would it end up but the bowles of a US Government warehouse, thoguht we’re not suggesting a visit to suburban Washington.) Cairo is repleat with tourist attractions. The Sphinx and the Pyramids at Giza are a easy day trip from the city. Cairo is also home to the Egyptian Museum, which has a world famous collection of antiquities. To tap into Indy’s character, take a trip down the Nile and do some architectual work of your own. Felucca trips (a small Egyptian sailboat) from Aswan to Cairo are a great way to see the ruins at Luxor and the Valley of the Kings.

Flights from £268 from London with British Airways, leaving 01 June, returning 27 June.

•Nepal
Who can forget the scene in Raiders where Indy fights a gang of toughs while the local tavern burns around him? While a difficult place to access, this is a land of ancient temples, spectacular views, and amazing culture. The hiking is the obvious draw - the Himalayans sprawl out across the northern region, and at the tippy-top lies Mt. Everest.

Flights from £578 from London with Qatar Airways, leaving 11 June, returning 23 June.

•Jordan
Follow in the footsteps of Dr. Jones and discover the ‘Canyon of the Crescent Moon,’ the purported resting place of the Holy Grail. Set in the rock city of Petra, in the Edom Mountains, you can see the stunning temples carved into the rocks by the Nabataean tribe of Arab nomads. After you grab the Grail and escape the crumbling temple, join the thousands of people running in the Annual Dead Sea Marathon or get lost in the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve in Azraq.

Flights from £331 from London with Cyprus Airways, leaving 26 June, returning 08 July.

•Sri Lanka
For fans of Temple of Doom, travel to the city of Kand, which lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy Valley. While the movie was set in India, filming took place in this Sri Lankan town. Harrison Ford famously hurt his back riding elephants here - let’s hope you’ll be more careful on your visit! Hot and humid year-round, this beautiful destination full of flora and fauna is a feast for the eyes and the wannabe adventurers out there.

Flights from £403 from London with Kuwait Airways, leaving 16 October, returning 02 November.

•Hawaii, USA
The Big Island of Hawaii was used to shoot jungle scenes in the latest film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This was the biggest film shoot in Hawaii since Kevin Costner's epic Waterworld but don't hold that against Indy. Step in the footprints of A-list Hollywood stars while absorbing the beautiful scenery. Hawaii's tropical climate make it a great all year round destination, not to mention its world famous beaches. Start your day with some famous Kona coffee which will give you the energy you need to explore Volcanoes National Park, home to the world's most famous active volcano Kilauea. Want-to-be archeologists should not miss Puukohola Heiau, the largest restored ancient Hawaiian religious temple (don't worry, it's snake free).

Flights from £457 from London with KLM Royal Dutch, leaving 26 June, returning 16 July.
