Innovative capsule kitchens on display at Sugar House

18th June 2008 Print
The latest in kitchen innovation is now on display at Sugar House, the Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd development on Leman Street, E1. The clever capsule kitchens are a must-have in interior design, and are perfect for the busy Londoner who desires the sleek and minimalist look. What's more, only eight of the one-bedroom apartments at Sugar House will be fitted with this stunning style statement.

Berkeley Homes has chosen the Linea Quattro example for the unique conversion apartments in the Grade II listed Sugar House. The kitchen is designed to look just like a piece of furniture, blending seamlessly with the new interior design scheme that has been created. The kitchen design is set to revolutionise open plan living, where kitchen clutter can spoil the contemporary lines.

The work surface of the kitchen is actually a lid that opens up to reveal a sunken two-ring ceramic hob and a stainless steel sink. Hidden away behind the taupe coloured doors is a slim-line dishwasher, a combination microwave oven, a fridge with icebox and ample storage space. Even the plug sockets for the kitchen are stowed away - you just pull down a column of sockets from the underside of the cupboards and push them back up when finished.

The capsule kitchen is a neat way of allowing the occupier to store, prepare and cook food when necessary while not having a permanent display of kitchen equipment and appliances. The design makes the kitchen area much less intrusive, so emphasis falls on the grand proportions of the room and the living space. The capsule kitchen is installed in just eight of the one-bedroom apartments at Sugar House, so design aficionados should be quick to visit Sugar House.

The new one-bedroom show apartment at Sugar House is a chance to see the homes that have been crafted from the magnificent Victorian conversion in all their glory. The Grade II listed building has yielded 42 unique one and two-bedroom apartments and penthouses, with high ceilings, six feet high arched windows and a dramatic lobby with original sweeping staircase. Plus, the apartment benefits from an inspirational new interior design from Box66. Complementing the capsule kitchen is a decadently furnished living area. The colour palate is dominated by sophisticated slate grey, with accents of gold and statement pieces of furniture, including two Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona chairs in black leather and a Terence Woodgate sofa. The look is completed by a low-slung feature light, which drops down into the centre of the room.

A lighter tone has been adopted in the bedroom in order to emphasise the six feet high arched feature window. The light that floods in is reflected off the white glossy fitted wardrobe doors and highlights the metallic glow on the soft furnishings. Shades of olive green have been used to dress the bed, and the colour is echoed in the floor to ceiling curtains. All the lights in the bedroom, including spotlights above the bed and a feature pendant light, are controlled by a master switch by the bed, with no need to leap from beneath the duvet to turn out the lights.

The bathroom displays the Berkeley Homes' outstanding specification for Sugar House, which offers purchasers an exceptional level of quality and finish. Again, the colour scheme is cool charcoal and slate grey, with limestone flooring, large format tiles laid in a landscape fashion, a composite stone vanity shelf, chrome finish ladder-style heater towel rail, mirrored bathroom cabinet with feature lighting and a double-ended centre fill bath.

Prices at Sugar House are from £465,000 for a one-bedroom apartment, from £675,00 for a two-bedroom apartment and from £1.1m for a two-bedroom penthouse.
