Teaching kids to create websites

30th July 2015 Print

Children are learning how to use the internet at younger ages now and it is important that as they learn they are taught things they can take with them into adulthood, and into future jobs.

One somewhat simple things they could benefit from is learning how to create websites. While there are many easy to use, and often somewhat cheap or free, website creation sites out there now, like Wix and WordPress, it helps for kids to learn how to set up a site from scratch.

Why is web development important for kids

Everyone has a website these days, from housewives blogging about their lives to presidential candidates sharing what they believe in, and everything in between. Some of these people set up their own websites, and some of them hire someone else to do it for them (making it a good career to get into).

Programming and coding are part of the basic language these days, so it makes sense to have kids learn about this in school. Waiting until they are teenagers, in middle school or in high school, can help ensure they have the focus to really learn how to do this.

How to teach kids web development

It seems that learning web design at a younger age can actually give a person extra advantage in the field, and it really isn't that hard of a thing to learn for people that really have an interest in the field.

The basics of web design that they will need to learn include wireframing, designing layout, coding HTML, CSS, PHP and Java scripts. They also need experience in content creation.

How to help them get a good start

One way to give your child a head start on learning how to be familiar with computers is allowing them time online. Let them explore and tinker. This lets them use their imaginative minds and learn more hands on.

Have your child get experienced with social media sites and even have them set up their own blog. With a blog and with social media they'll begin to get a good feel for content creation, which will help them with their web design learning.

You should also allow them to tinker with sites like Wix and WordPress, where they can practice with a free website. Point them to online resources like the iPage blog, where they can learn about the importance of apps, email marketing and more.

Not only does learning all of this help your child get ahead in the real world, with more options for future employment, but it also allows them more technical savvy and they may find that they enjoy creating websites even just for themselves or their friends.

Web design doesn't have to be a career, it can be a great hobby as well. There are many reasons to set up a website, or a personal blog, from just wanting to share your life, to sharing your hobbies or your career. Children may find it fun to have a website for their lemonade stand, or maybe they'll want to help mom or dad out by setting up a site for them.
