5 careers created by technology in the past 5 years

9th November 2015 Print

The world is quickly shifting and adapting to the advances in technology that are taking place - and with it new job roles are created to keep up with demand. Careers are being carved out by technology, and here are five examples of positions that probably didn’t exist even five years ago:

1. Social Media Consultant

Usually working in a digital media agency – which also probably didn’t exist in the same sense five years ago – the social media consultant works closely with clients to boost their presence on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

They devise strategies that will boost followers and click-throughs on content and schedule posts that are determined by current events and reactive news.

2. App Developer

Apps are big money makers now and people have kick started their career developing and working on apps for people, which either work to entertain, inform or assist them. An app developer job position would have existed five years ago but not considered a true career path until now – after all the iPhone 4 was only released then and we were still struggling to play Temple Run on our tiny screens.

These days everyone is creating apps, with many brands considering them integral to sales on mobile devices. Apple has made $15billion in revenue from mobile applications alone

3. iOS developer and Android developer

After Apple and Google released their platforms back in 2007 to tie in with the release of their handsets a new job role was born. Now the companies employ hundreds of people to work on software updates, patches and fix bugs on a daily basis.

4. Digital Marketing Assistant

The world of digitally created content is booming, as brands utilise online platforms to climb Google rankings and increase click throughs to their website. Roles in digital marketing are now hugely popular, as people move into the industry to work in all manner of specialities from content writing to account management to SEO.

You will always find positions in this industry now, in most towns and cities now up and down the UK. Even a search in a small town such as Preston brings up 33 positions while a search in London finds 1,320 roles available on Jobstoday.

5. Chief Listening Officer

Similar to the social media consultant we mentioned earlier, a Chief Listening Officer works for a brand and spends their time looking and listening to what people are saying about the company online.

This role first gained popularity around five years ago, when businesses started to recognise the importance of their online presence and needed a way to monitor their demographic’s response to them. A good Chief Listening Officer takes note of what is being said about the brand online and puts together plans to react, in order to encourage positivity and growth. They more than likely come from strategic backgrounds and are great problem solvers.

Technology has shaped the way we work and created plenty of new opportunities for digitally minded people that they may have never considered before. While many argue that technology is taking jobs away from people, as machines themselves can complete certain tasks quicker and experts believe eventually a third of jobs will be replaced by robots, it is still opening doors for many.
