Record sales figures for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in the UK for the first quarter of 2011 also achieved international recognition, as UK sales in March alone set a new export sales record for the month in the history of the company worldwide and beat the UK’s previous record from March 2007 by over 450 vehicles.

With a total of 7,316 vehicles registered up to the end of March, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles enjoyed a 32.2 per cent increase in sales compared to the same period last year, and a 1,800 vehicle lead over its nearest rival to comfortably maintain its third position in the total market.

The new Caddy, launched at the end of 2010, has already proved a great success compared to the first three months last year with sales up by over 700 vehicles, or 43 per cent.  It also outsold the Ford Transit Connect to make it the best-selling van in the 2,000 to 2,499 kg light van sector.

The new Transporter, also launched last year, increased sales by 44 per cent, or nearly 1,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2011 compared to 2010, and continued as Volkswagen’s best-selling van in the UK.

Simon Elliott, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK, said: ‘Our sales figures are even more impressive because they have been achieved without resorting to distress tactics or offering huge discounts which wreck residual values of our customers’ assets.  Instead, this success is because we now have a really fresh range of vehicles with advanced Euro5 engines on every model, a dedicated Van Centre network and staff who have worked hard to give exceptional customer service.’
