Millions of people in the UK suffer from digestive problems, often in an embarrassed silence. There are a wide range of digestive disorders, from IBS, which will affect a third of the UK population at some point in their lives, to Crohn's disease, affecting 1 in 1000 people.

Now in its 13th year, the 22nd -28th August 2011 is Love Your Gut's 'Gut Week'. Maybe it's not the most glamorous of causes, but it's certainly an important one. And we all know that when our bodies (and bellies) are at their peak, we feel our most glamorous.

At Mayr and More every week is Gut Week. Below are Dr Frank Bolvari, medical director and general manager's top tips for keeping the digestive system happy and healthy.

Do not eat late or consume heavy meals in the evening, as this will cut off your human growth hormone release. These hormones help with your repair mechanisms, such as the immune system and reduce the velocity of ageing.

Taking a good quality probiotic really will improve the health of your gut. Probiotic yoghurts and drinks do not contain enough probiotic to have a real effect and will simply help to maintain the function of the acidophilic flora. For intestinal refurbishment you will need a probiotic supplement with at least 4 to 6 of the most important bacteria such as BioCare Bioaidophilus and an intake of at least 2 months.

Eat Slowly and try and chew every mouthful at least 20 times.

A high fiber diet including wholemeal cereals, vegetables and fruit is important for healthy digestion. Ideally 30g of fiber per day.

Try not to eat raw foods (such as salads) for your evening meal or lots of fiber which will lead to fermentation and toxin production in the gut over night.

Keep hydrated, it is important to drink six to eight glasses or water or blond tea per day.

Regular exercise can help a sluggish gut.

Try and visit Mayr & more to take the FX Mayr cure at lease once a year for ultimate digestive health.
