Thirty minutes is all you need (…if you push yourself)

The results of a large exercise study have just been published in the leading journal ‘Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise’ and have shown that just thirty minutes of exercise, three times a week, can have significant effects on our health, but only if you work hard!

The researchers, who studied 1,150 young adults over a period of 15 weeks, asked participants to exercise for thirty minutes a day, 3 days a week, at 65-85% of their maximum heart rate (which represents the higher end of the effort scale). It was seen that those people who stuck to the protocol and exercised effectively for the full thirty minutes not only had a better BMI (body mass index) to those who didn’t, but they also lowered blood pressure, cholesterol and resting heart rate.

The key point of the study was that, whilst just three half hour exercise sessions a week was effective at improving people’s health, it only had significant results if for the thirty minute sessions people pushed themselves.
