Britain’s best loved meal, the traditional Christmas dinner, is under threat from extinction. According to PizzaExpress, turkey has fallen fowl of other poultry. Half (49%) of Brits serve up other poultry, such as duck instead of the golden bird, and over two-fifths (45%) reveal they’d replace turkey on Christmas Day given the choice.

And whilst turkey and all the trimmings are still on the Christmas Day menu for now, over a quarter (27%) of Brits claim they’ve already swapped classic Christmas cuisine for something more contemporary such as pizza.

Nearly three-quarters of Brits (72%) claim they only eat Turkey with all the trimmings because of family tradition. And given the choice, over a third (37%) revealed they would rather eat an alternative like a curry, fish and chips or Italian on Christmas Day.

In Wolverhampton turkey is most at risk from being replaced by chicken and in Worcester it’s threatened by beef with over 70% of people choosing these alternatives. Aberystwyth is also departing from the conventional Christmas fowl, with half (50%) of residents choosing duck over Turkey.  Turkey isn’t the only food in danger of being off the Christmas menu. Over a fifth of Brits claim they don’t like Brussel sprouts, Christmas pudding and cranberry sauce and only serve them out of tradition. Research shows that Aberdeen and Coventry are the Christmas curry capitals with over 15% of people choosing a Rogan Josh over a roast. Aberystwyth is the fish and chips capital with nearly a fifth of Brits (17%) choosing a less traditional Christmas meal.

The survey comes as PizzaExpress introduces its Christmas menu which includes the new Anatra pizza. Featuring the classic combination of pulled duck and a light plum hoisin sauce along with shredded courgette, rocket and red and spring onion, this pizza embraces our new found love for duck this festive season.

Antenor Siqueria, head chef at PizzaExpress says: “The new Anatra duck pizza is a mouth-watering alternative to the traditional festive feast, which will appeal to those people who are not a fan of turkey with the trimmings.”

The new Anatra is available from PizzaExpress restaurants now and is priced at £13.95.
