GB rowers aim for ‘oarsome’ 2010

25th May 2010 Print

The GB Rowing team for the 2010 World Cup regatta season has been unveiled featuring many familiar and some new faces – and one which could be unfairly described as ‘old’!

After a decade in retirement, 1992 Olympic gold medallist Greg Searle has earned a place in the men’s eight aged 38, with his sights set on medals at this year’s three World Cup events and the World Championship.

Searle is joined in the team by defending Olympic champions, Andrew Triggs Hodge and Peter Reed, who compete again this season as a pair and are looking for revenge against the New Zealanders who pushed them into second last year

Katherine Grainger, a three-time Olympic silver medallist, sets out in a double for the very first time with Anna Watkins, and reveals her hopes for the season.

With a busy season ahead, including the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand in early November, the first World Cup regatta is in Bled in Slovenia at the end of May.

Legendary men’s coach Jurgen Grobler – who has coached crews to Olympic gold in every Games since 1972 – and experienced women’s and lightweights coach Paul Thompson, also give their insight into the team, and the challenges of the season.
