McCarthy & Stone reveals Howden development name

Retirement property developer McCarthy & Stone has revealed the name of its newest Later Living development in Howden as Barnes Wallis Court.

11-year-old Cassie Stevens’ suggestion was selected following a competition run by McCarthy & Stone to find a name for the development which had local significance.

Barnes Wallis was a scientist, engineer and inventor who headed up a team of designers that constructed HM Airship R100 at Howden World War I Airship station.

Pupils from nearby Howden Junior School worked together to think of suitable names for the development, but it was year 6 Cassie’s idea that was judged the winner.

Fiona Brooks, Regional Sales and Marketing Director at McCarthy & Stone, said: “We pride ourselves on building communities and not just homes, so we always aim to select names for our new developments that will have real meaning to the local residents.

“Being able to work alongside the students at Howden Junior School has helped us to gain a better understanding of the local community as a whole, and we have been really impressed by the amount of valuable research they each put in to coming up with some great names. We really can’t thank Cassie enough for suggesting Barnes Wallis Court!”

When complete, Barnes Wallis Court will provide 39 one and two bedroom Later Living apartments designed exclusively for those over the age of 60 looking to make the most out of the independence that retirement can offer.

Conveniently located on Charles Briggs Avenue and just a short distance from the town centre, the purpose built apartments will provide residents with a manageable and secure living environment, whilst giving them added peace of mind from still owning their own home.

The apartments will each include a number of thoughtful design features such as a 24-hour personal emergency call service to ensure help and support is at hand if needed.

Residents will be able to maintain an active lifestyle thanks to additional features such as a communal residents’ lounge and a guest suite for visiting friends and family.
