Leicester regeneration moves forward with arrival of new homes

The regeneration of Leicester city centre has surged forward with the launch of housebuilder Morris Homes’ new development of two and three-bedroom homes.
In response to local demand for quality starter homes, the 81 properties at The Abbey Quarter development include a mix of modern two-bedroom apartments alongside two and three-bedroom houses designed to reflect the industrial background of the area.
Located on Abbey Park Road, materials used to construct the properties at the former brownfield site include brick sourced from the local Ibstock factory. The first phase of these new build homes is now on sale, starting at £122,750.
Cindy Cade, regional sales director at Morris, said: “Leicester is establishing itself as a cosmopolitan, vibrant city, and the launch of The Abbey Quarter means quality homes are now available to first-time buyers keen to stay in their local area and enjoy the benefits of city centre living.”
The homes overlook Abbey Park, and are near a mix of shops, schools and health centres. With research from Morris revealing that 60% of first-time buyers are delaying their move into homeownership because of the size of the deposit they need, Morris is offering a number of supportive schemes at The Abbey Quarter.
With the Government-led FirstBuy scheme first-time buyers only need to put down a 5% deposit. Their mortgage payments are reduced as they purchase their home at 80% of its market value, whilst still owning 100% of the property.
The NewBuy scheme is also available at The Abbey Quarter, and allows buyers to secure a new build Morris home using just a 5% deposit, providing an affordable route onto the property ladder with a 95% mortgage.
Cindy added: “Our new build homes are a popular choice for first-time buyers because they don’t need the kind of work doing to them that second hand properties require, but securing the necessary deposit is proving an obstacle for nearly two-thirds of first-time buyers.
“The financial support available with schemes like FirstBuy and NewBuy paves the way for buyers to purchase their first home at The Abbey Quarter, which is within walking distance of a great selection of schools and essential amenities.”
Properties at the development offer easy access to public transport links and a range of cultural attractions such as the De Montfort Hall, The Curve theatre and the National Space Centre.
