Five new hotel openings in Mallorca

Five new privately owned boutique hotels and apartments have opened, or are about to open, in Mallorca this year firmly boosting the quality end of the island’s luxury accommodation sector. These include four in Palma; The Calatrava Boutique Hotel, Cort Hotel, Cuba Hotel, Palma Suites and the Castell Son Claret in Es Capdella (south west) approximately 25 minutes drive from Palma.

Calatrava Boutique Hotel

Now open - The new five star Calatrava Boutique Hotel opened its doors on April 1st in the most historic and sought after area of Palma beside the city’s old seawalls with magnificent views across the sea, the Bay of Palma and the city.

This is the second hotel to be opened by husband and wife team Miguel Conde Moragues and his architect wife, Cristina Marti Crespi, following the successful opening of Hotel Can Cera (cancerahotel.com) 18 months ago in a 17th century “palacio” located 5 minutes walk away from the new Calatrava Boutique Hotel.

The new hotel’s five storey building forms part of the frontline façade that originally was incorporated into the old Arab walls of the city which have since disappeared. The building, which dates back to the 19th century, offers a total of 16 rooms with six large deluxe suites (40m2) with their own private terrace and four Junior Suites with views over the old town and the Parc del Mar.

The style of the rooms is light and spacious combining contemporary style into the existing charm of the original building with the focus on comfort and the enjoyment of the fabulous views.

Facilities include a spectacular breakfast room/bar terrace on the top floor and a café-bistro on the hotel’s main living floor known as the “planta noble”. The hotel’s spa features a Finnish sauna, Jacuzzi, treatment rooms, an exercise area for private yoga classes, shower room and relaxation area.

The public areas of the hotel include a drawing room with comfortable sofas and tables, an internet area for client and a 90m 2 sun terrace with panoramic views over Palma Bay towards the local Portixol harbour nearby. In front of the hotel an outside terrace with sea views will be created serving hotel clients as well as the public for light refreshments and snacks.

The hotel’s location is a few minutes’ walk away from Palma Cathedral and the King’s official residence; The Almudaina Palace, in an important historic area which was originally constructed between the 13th and 14th century taking its name from the Order of Calatrava following the Christian conquest of Mallorca. Palma Suites, Palma

Now open: new four star Palma Suites, located in Plaza Mercadal (Palma), offer a selection of individual apartments finished to a high standard in modern contemporary design. A selection of 35 furnished and fully equipped apartments that can be rented by week or by month. Depending on availability, suites can also be rented on a daily basis. The price for a junior suite starts at 166€ per day with discounts for a 7 night stay or a 28 day stay.
All suites include bedroom, bathroom and sitting room with generous storage space. All are fitted with a modern kitchen, dishwasher, stove with oven, toaster, fridge and freezer and es-presso coffee machine. Under-floor heating and air conditioning are standard. Castell Son Claret, Es Capdella

Now open, the Castell Son Claret is a privately owned “castle” dating back to the 18th century is located in a “secret” valley just outside the village of Es Capdella on its own 325 acre estate and surrounded by Mallorca’s famous Sierra Tramuntana Mountains. This five star hotel comprises 38 rooms and suites, many of which feature either their own terrace or a private garden. Public facilities include the Zaranda Michelin Star restaurant headed up by Fernando Perez Arellano, the Olivera Restaurant, The Bar Castell located in the old chapel of the castle, a large outdoor pool, and Spa Claret with heated indoor pool, sauna, gymnasium, hamman/arab bath and treatment rooms offering a wide range of treatments.

The magnificent driveway of Castell Son Claret leading up to the main building is flanked on either side by established Mediterranean gardens. Opening summer 2013

The Cort Hotel, Palma.

Opening early summer, The Cort Hotel is located on Plaza Cort opposite Palma Town Hall’s historic building. The hotel is a total refurbishment of an existing building and will offer 14 suites and 2 double rooms. The top “island suite” is a duplex suite with a roof top terrace, private Jacuzzi, sunbeds, views across Plaza Cort and the sea. This suite can also be connected to another 2 bedroom suite.

Many of the suites will have balconies and some can be connected to other suites. Apart from the regular features associated with a luxury hotel, all rooms will be equipped with a private “enoteca” a mini bodega and a docking station for a range of tablets, smart phones and other electronic devices. Other services include an IPAD preloaded with information on Palma and Mallorca to guide guests around during their stay.

The Cort Hotel will feature one main restaurant serving Mallorcan/Mediterranean cuisine serving food throughout the day with one informal and formal areas and a large sitting area (140 seats) outside the hotel on Plaza Cort. The main bar will also have show cooking elements for cutting ham, oyster and cerviche bar. Plus a bar lounge on the hotel’s mezzanine floor with a balcony overlooking the restaurant. In addition, the hotel will offer a private dining/events room for up to 25 people.

The Cuba Hotel, Palma

Also opening this summer: The Cuba Hotel (formerly Hostal Cuba) – an iconic building in the heart of Palma’s bustling Santa Catalina market area. The building has been completely refurbished by a local Mallorcan businessman to create an elegant 4 star boutique hotel and ensure the continued future of this beautiful landmark. The hotel rooms are located above the existing Colonial Bar Cuba with its popular restaurant for snacks and meals at all times of the day. Coming up in 2014/2015:

Kameha Bay Hotel, Portals Bay is scheduled to open in 2014. The German based Lifestyle Hospitality and Entertainment Group (LH&E) has acquired an existing building in Portals to convert into a new exclusive hotel called the Kameha Bay Portals. This project is located on the beach front next to Puerto Portals in Mallorca’s south west region close to Palma.

The LH&E Group’s move into Mallorca’s luxury hotel sector follows investment by leading international hotel groups including, Starwood, Hilton, Orient Express, St Regis and the Jumeirah Group. Further information: kamehabay.com

Hyatt Hotels have announced the opening of their first hotel in Mallorca at Canyamel near Capdepera on the north east coast. The five star, 142 bed hotel, is scheduled to open in 2015.
