Aldgate is in the midst of a residential regeneration which is completely transforming perceptions of the area. The flowering of the creative sector here, energized by the Truman Brewery, London Metropolitan University and the Whitechapel Art Gallery, has helped stimulate entrepreneurial activity which, along with young professionals seeking homes on the City fringes, has generated new residential interest one of London’s most ancient districts.

Altitude, a new 27-storey residential tower at 71 Alie Street, E1 8EB, is a joint venture being undertaken by Barratt London and L&Q. Comprised of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, as well as penthouses, with prices starting from £690,000.

Offering superb living accommodation, many of the apartments at Altitude have a balcony or terrace, with breathtaking views over London, looking out onto Canary Wharf and beyond.

Altitude is situated within walking distance of the City which makes it the perfect commuter destination. The area also benefits from shopping, world-class restaurants and local cafes and pubs. The fusion of ancient and modern helps to make it a sought after destination.

The ancient district of Aldgate has some buildings, including the Hoop & Grapes pub, which predate the Great Fire of 1666. A gate did indeed exist, spanning the road to Colchester even before the Romans began building London’s Wall in the late 2nd century. Rebuilt several times, a gate remained here until 1761. Geoffrey Chaucer once lived above the gate while working as a customs official. Now, Aldgate is considered the gateway to such attractions as Brick Lane, Old Spitalfields market and Petticoat Lane.

Altitude has been designed by RMA Architects which specializes in the design and regeneration of urban sites.

Jo Lewinski, director of RMA Architects comments: “Altitude is an exciting new residential tower in Aldgate providing high quality private homes in the heart of London. The elegant curves of the aluminum and glass tower will create an iconic landmark close to the City of London. The accommodation will have unrivaled apartment views across the city skyline, whilst the lower levels are designed to sympathetically respond to existing properties.

“Altitude will be a catalyst for regeneration of the area, creating ground floor retail and cafe facilities around an open public space that integrates the building into its surroundings, and brings animation to the streetscape. The scheme is extremely close to extensive transport links, and the smart new piazza will encourage pedestrian activity to nearby retail, leisure, cultural and education facilities.”

The interiors at Altitude will all have a choice of Amtico flooring heated from below as well as floor to ceiling windows allowing plenty of natural light. Kitchens will come with Siemens appliances integrated into stylish contemporary layouts.

The development will also feature retail units, a 24 hour concierge service and a roof terrace for residents.

Altitude’s location is a major draw, just a few minutes' walk to the City but also surrounded by commuter links. The development is a short walk from Aldgate and Aldgate East stations on the Circle, Hammersmith and City Lines, which means Liverpool Street is just one stop. Tower Gateway is also within walking distance, for the Docklands Light Railway with easy access to Canary Wharf, The Docklands and City Airport.
