Bakery products really are the best thing since sliced bread

11th October 2013 Print

Wrapped bakery products such as pre-sliced loaves and bread rolls really are the best thing since sliced bread, and are the nation's most popular supermarket product, according to figures from Quidco ClickSnap.

Figures show that baked goods from bagels to buns account for a whopping 7.77% of total supermarket spend, with cheese and yoghurts also making the top three.

New statistics from Quidco ClickSnap also reveal that tastebuds are tickled by different products, depending on one's hometown. For example, Brummy shoppers spend a quarter more than average on tinned meats such as Spam, whereas trollies in Leeds are brimming with baked beans in comparison to the average shopper.

It also appears that shoppers in the capital fill their baskets with products promising to help in their bid for the body beautiful, spending 124% more than average on cereal bars and healthy snacks in comparison to the national average.

As well-renowned lovers of convenience foods, new Quidco ClickSnap stats reveal Brits appear to be stockpiling goods to help cut corners in the kitchen. Tinned vegetables, tinned pasta and pot snacks make up a significant four per cent of total UK grocery spend. Consumers in London, however, spend half as much on buying Pot Noodle style ready meals than the rest of the UK.

Paul Lees, a spokesperson for Quidco ClickSnap, comments: "It's interesting to see how different British shopping habits are, when analysed regionally.

"Health seems to be top of the agenda for London shoppers, whereas comfort foods top the list in other busy cities such as Leeds and Edinburgh.

"Some items, however, appear never to lose their universal appeal to the British supermarket shopper; the best thing since sliced bread to us Brits seems to be just that."
