Affordable housing in the heart of London

The redevelopment of Lavington Mansions, the former MacDonald Buchanan House School of Nursing on Ogle Street, London W1, has been completed. Architectural practice TateHindle was appointed by The Crown Estate to produce concept designs, which secured detailed planning permission for the work.

The building comprises 21 stylish, new, affordable homes over eight floors, including six for shared ownership. The Crown Estate worked with Peabody, a registered housing provider and community regeneration charity, as its delivery partner.

Patrick Duffy, development manager at Peabody, said: “TateHindle’s design has produced affordable homes of the highest quality in the City of Westminster. Located in Fitzrovia, just a stone’s throw from Oxford Circus, Lavington Mansions is a fine example of an all-affordable scheme in the heart of the West End, providing a range of Peabody homes, from one-bedroom flats to family-sized homes.”

The development forms part of The Crown Estate’s £1 billion investment scheme for the Regent Street Quarter and is located just moments from Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Mayfair and Soho.

Each of the apartments is designed to provide flexible living arrangements with layouts that meet Lifetime Homes standards. The elevations are a combination of Portland stone and facing brick and the roofs are utilised for solar panels and greenery to support bio-diversity.

Jim Hindle, director of TateHindle, said: “The finished project provides a striking residential building with contemporary design principles which enhance the conservation area, providing sustainable and affordable apartments for the residents of the City of Westminster.”

AJ100 architectural practice TateHindle was founded in 1991 by experienced architects Andrew Tate and James Hindle. The focus is firmly on providing imaginative solutions through combining design flair and a pragmatic commercial approach. The firm has worked repeatedly for major developers such as British Land, The Crown Estate, M&G Real Estate, Grosvenor, Schroders, Countryside Properties and others on high profile projects across commercial, residential, retail and leisure projects. Significant schemes include a major mixed-use refurbishment that forms part of the St James’s Market regeneration; the 12 storey, 92,000 sq ft New Fetter Place office development by Holborn Circus; the delivery of The Triton Building at Regent’s Place; and Long Road, Clay Farm near Cambridge, a 2013 project winner in the Housing Design Awards.
