Seat UK welcomes Leon Supercopa Challenge 2009

SEAT is once again at the heart of amateur British motor racing with the introduction of the SEAT Leon Supercopa Challenge 2009.

Run independently, the series is both recognised and welcomed by SEAT UK. It seeks to continue the spirit and ethos of the highly successful SEAT Cupra Championship, which came to an end last season. That series, which followed the British Touring Car season around the UK, was a breeding ground for ‘tin-top’ talent with the likes of Rob Huff and Matt Jackson counting among its champions.

Like its predecessor, the SEAT Leon Supercopa Challenge is a one-make series with Touring Car-style performance for a fraction of the cost. It comprises the current shape Leon Cupra race car as well as the previous Leon Cupra R, allowing wider budget ranges and busier grids.

Further measures aim to keep costs to a minimum such as controlled tyre use and cars for hire as well as sale.

The race calendar with MSVR features the Formula Palmer Audi and GT Cup programmes for added visibility and kicks off at Donington Park, new home to the F1 British Grand Prix, this April.

The full calendar is as follows:

18/19 April Donington Park
4 May Castle Combe
16/17 May Anglesey International
6/7 June Silverstone National
18/19 July Brands Hatch GP (with WTCC)
8 August Oulton Park International
22/23 August Snetterton
3/4 October Brands Hatch Indy

The season will also feature an ‘away race’ at the famous Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. And, just like the SEAT Cupra Championship, the new series is compatible with the European Supercopa series, which means that it is now possible to race in the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy.

SEAT UK Head of Marketing Steve Robertson said of the announcement: ‘SEAT is a sporty, dynamic brand so we’re very happy to see the creation of this new UK race series. Of course, SEAT already competes at the highest level through the WTCC but engaging with up-and-coming talent is also important. That’s why we’re warmly welcoming the Leon Supercopa Challenge 2009 in the UK.’

The SEAT Leon Supercopa Challenge 2009 features Dunlop Control tyres and Sunoco race fuels, while technical support and parts are provided both at, and away from, the circuit by SEAT Sport & Special Tuning Limited.
