New Volvo 360hp Euro 4 engine for construction and distribution sectors
The Volvo D13A was launched last September as a completely new 13-litre engine with power levels of 400hp, 440hp, 480hp and 520hp at Euro 3 levels. These engines are now available to order at Euro 4 level and, due to popular demand, a new power rating of 360hp has been added to the range.Aimed at the 32 tonne 8x4 construction market and lighter tractor units from 28-40 tonnes, the new 360hp option has been specially developed for use in the ever-popular FM range of vehicles.
The Volvo FM is ideally suited for construction and regional operations, where there is a demand for lower power, but higher torque. Those properties make the D13-engine, with its larger cylinder volume and stroke length, ideal for the task. The new option has a peak torque of 1800 Nm and offers high torque over a wide rev range.
"We have seen a significant demand for this type of engine in the 13-litre programme," says Brian Smith, Truck Manager at Volvo Truck and Bus. "We believe it will be appreciated especially by those customers who demand high torque output at low engine speed like, for example, when driving off-road or in arduous distribution conditions."
The engine technology is the same as all other new generation Volvo engines, in that it is a straight six-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine with high-pressure electronic unit injectors and the class-leading Volvo Engine Brake (VEB), a ‘must’ when working in a construction environment.
The new D13A 360hp engine meets Euro 4 emission standards, using SCR exhaust gas after-treatment. The engine is available with either the Volvo 9-speed, 14-speed, I-shift automated or Powertronic automatic transmission.
The first 360hp D13A engine will be available to order from February 2006 and in production from April.
