Grundy Excavation clear the way for their new top marque

At present the company’s fleet stands at 18 trucks, including four new tippers. Traditionally the company has purchased MAN, but as Managing Director Kevin Grundy discovered there are alternative marques that make reliable, high performance tippers. After test-driving a number of tippers from the leading manufacturers Kevin explains, " I wanted to research the market to find a truck that would exceed the demands and pressures the company have come to expect - I found it in Volvo."
Kevin has recently purchased four Volvo FM12 tippers; the first Volvo’s joining the Grundy fleet. The top marque was mainly chosen for their high ground clearance between the floor and underside on the truck. "Being in the excavations industry our trucks need to cover heavy terrain, if ground clearance is low damage can often occur," explains Managing Director Kevin Grundy. "Volvo units have a good chassis clearance, therefore they make great tippers.
In the past Kevin stated that he has had problems with various marques, not meeting his requirements of high ground clearance. Kevin commented that Volvo fitted brake chambers underneath the axle of their units and therefore increased the chance of underside damage. "I am thankful to see that Volvo models now have brake chambers fitted above the axle, this is great for our industry."
Plated for 32 tonne GCW operation, the 380 bhp, 8x4 tippers have been specified with day cab in ‘Fleet’ trim and straight beam front axles for increased ground clearance.
Supplied by Will Sheffield at Thomas Hardie Commercials in Liverpool, Kevin wanted a total package from his vehicle supplier, "Thomas Hardie can guarantee a service solution and geographically they are ideal."
The vehicles will also be maintained at Thomas Hardie’s Liverpool Depot a short distance from Grundy and Co’s landfill site where the trucks will mainly work transferring waste.
