Volvo first with online Vehicle Excise Duty

Volvo Trucks is the first truck manufacturer to provide its Dealers and customers with LGV first registration documents and Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) discs, the administration for which has been carried out online.

The scheme, which has been up and running at Volvo since June, is a DVLA-approved system enabling automatic online production of new vehicle registration documents and formatting of information for the intial VED disc. Volvo’s wholly-owned Truck and Bus Centres administrated from its Warwick HQ are the first to benefit from the programme with several independent Dealers likely to also implement it in the future.

The provision of first registration documents and VED online is a proven, secure system which has been used by car manufacturers for around five years. A major benefit for Volvo Trucks and its Dealer Network is that it provides the ability to react to late changes in administration and specification change, particularly with regard to gross and axle weights, bodywork types or paint colour. Allocation of new personalised registration numbers can also be made online. An additional element of the new service is that replacement VED discs are also being supplied for Used trucks via the online system.

According to Volvo Truck Operations Manager Chris Carr, the system is a boon to the administration of new vehicle registration. “Taxation is at the end of the process which means that it can be quite a stressed operation as we react to late changes just as the trucks are about to go on the road and information on the tax disc has to be 100% accurate.”

He adds, “Producing first registration documents and information for the VED disc has helped efficiency, flexibility and overall control of the process. We can now view virtual tax discs on the screen in a secure environment.”
