UK’s first FH16-580 Euro 4 goes to Chris Waite Transport

The UK’s first new generation Volvo FH16-580 tractor unit has entered service with East Riding of Yorkshire-based Chris Waite Transport to help celebrate their 25th anniversary year.

The 6x2 Push-Axle tractor is being used on livestock haulage in Chris Waite’s premium quality fleet of 44 tonne rigs engaged in the transport of premium quality livestock, which is often organically farmed, for many of the UK’s major food retailers.

The SCR technology equipped Euro 4 truck, supplied by Volvo Dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus of Hull, includes the latest generation D16 – 16 litre engine, which develops 2800 Nm of torque at 1200 rpm. The AdBlue tank has a capacity of 65 litres and consumption is reported by the company to be between 3 and 4 % of diesel usage.

With a 4.1 metre wheelbase, the vehicle also boasts I-Shift automated transmission, polished Alcoa aluminium wheels and Volvo single-reduction rear drive-axle. The Globetrotter cab in Prestige trim includes full climate control, CD player and heated, air-suspended seats.

Operating across the UK from their base in Driffield, the FH16 hauls an £80,000, multi-deck, air-suspended Pezzaioli trailer constructed in Brescia, Italy. One of a fleet of 11, the trailer is constructed of lightweight aluminium planking and features an automatic drinking and feeding system designed for all types of livestock, forced ventilation, hydraulically lifting roof and infra-red remote control for the decks, tailgate and air-suspension. The trailers exceed all legislated requirements for UK livestock haulage and the operation is closely scrutinised by Waite’s retail customers who insist on the highest standards for livestock in transit.

Says Chris Waite, “We specify premium quality vehicles and trailers because we operate at the high value, high image end of the market. The premium supermarkets want to know that their top of the range products are being properly looked after at all points in the supply chain, from farm to the table.”

Whatever the customer wants in terms of quality and service level, we will deliver. That includes double-shifting and 24/7 availability.
