Console or Casino - Which sector of the gaming industry evolved the fastest?

6th November 2020 Print

The gaming industry as a whole is known for its rapid progression, and games seem to have evolved at a lightning pace over the years. With consoles about to enter their next generation with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it could be argued that these are the most advanced gaming devices on the planet. However, the online casino industry is also pushing the boundaries of its technological capabilities and it is hard to imagine where it could go next.

Astonishing Progress Has Been Made on Consoles

It’s amazing to think that it was less than fifty years ago that Pong was released by Atari. The 1972 offering was one of the earliest arcade games, and it sparked an industry that has ballooned and expanded exponentially ever since. That rudimentary game set the wheels in motion for all the years of advancements that have followed, on all the various generations of console.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X will display just how far this type of gaming has come. Early trailers for the games boast the most realistic and immersive graphics ever seen, with it sometimes being hard to figure out that you’re actually watching a game. This is shown superbly in the trailer for Far Cry 6, which features Breaking Bad star, Giancarlo Esposito.

In addition to the incredible visuals, the new consoles will also be improving player feel with the controllers. The PS5 is reported to include haptic controllers that give a deeper and richer feeling to the player as he or she explores the games.

Slots Highlight the Amazing Evolution of Casino

The new offerings like Far Cry 6 show a highly impressive evolution from the original arcade titles like Pong. But what about casino games? Slots, in particular, have undergone an equally astonishing evolutionary journey.

The first ever slot game was invented in the late 19th Century by American inventor Charles Fey. This original machine was a clunky device with three reels, operated by a lever at the side. Fast-forward to 2020, and the slot games online that stemmed from this are unrecognisable compared to the 1894 release. The latest technological development in online slots found at STS, a UK casino online, is the Megaways engine. This gives players an astonishingly high number of win lines on each spin. Some of the games that use this include Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Extra Chilli.

Hard to Pick a Winner

When thinking about how far these two offshoots of the gaming industry have come, it is extremely hard to pick a winner. Both consoles and casino games have evolved into mammoth offerings that look nothing like the early games that started it all. Slot machines have been around for much longer, but their evolution has arguably been more rapid in recent years. Consoles have steadily improved since the early models in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The one thing that is certain is the fact that the evolutionary process is still ongoing. Slots and console games are continuing to get bigger and better, providing players with an incredible entertainment experience.
