What Viewers Can Expect from La Liga: All Access Season Two

12th August 2024 Print

Sports documentaries are all the rage in 2024.

From Break Point and Drive to Survive to Full Swing and Welcome to Wrexham, pretty much every fan of sports is catered for by Netflix, Prime Video, and other streaming services.

Football in particular is a popular vehicle for a documentary series, with the Spanish La Liga the latest league to be brought to the silver screen by Netflix.

Charting the travails of the 2023/24 season, La Liga: All Access has become an instant hit with viewers – some of the individual episodes scoring over 7.0 on IMDB.

So what can we expect from season two, which will likely air in the summer of 2025?

As You Were

Those who place a bet in football will already know that Real Madrid, the 2023/24 La Liga champions, are red-hot favourites with the bookmakers at odds of 4/9 to retain their title ahead of Barcelona, whose return to their iconic Camp Nou home will surely feature as a standalone episode.

Few football predictions would have given Girona a chance of success last season, but they outperformed all expectations in finishing in third place – for much of the campaign, they were hot on the heels of Real too.

The most popular episode of season one of La Liga: All Access was ‘The Surprise Guest’, which has a score of 7.3 on IMDB. That focused on Girona’s incredible run to the top of the table, so they may find themselves subject to another chapter in the series – this time, they’ll be amongst the hunted teams, rather than the hunter.

One of the things that the series so far has prided itself upon is showcasing the diverse stories of clubs across Spain, not just the big guns. The uneasy rivalry between the two Madrid teams, Real and Atletico, is one of football’s most fascinating, while the relative struggles of Sevilla – once one of the most prestigious teams in the country – have also come under the microscope.

There really is something for everyone!

Against All Odds

The team behind the documentary also had access to the Basque region during the first season, where the rivalry between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao is as fierce as ever.

They’re two of the teams battling to be crowned ‘best of the rest’, with Real and Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and now Girona heralded as the kings of Spanish football.

Athletic Club are perhaps the side most likely to ‘do a Girona’ in 2024/25. A handful of their players impressed during Spain’s triumphant run at Euro 2024, while in head coach Ernesto Valverde they have a leader who has enjoyed success wherever he has gone.

Another fascinating rivalry in Spanish football is that found in the city of Pamplona. Real Betis snuck into the European qualification places last season to anoint themselves as the crown princes of the region, but Osasuna were only 12 points behind them in the league table.

It will be interesting to see if the cameras are turned on one or more of the three promoted teams: Leganes, Valladolid, and Espanyol. The latter won the Copa del Rey and reached the final of the UEFA Cup as recently as the mid-2000s, so their return to La Liga is a fantastic story.

One thing is for sure: whoever the cameras are trained upon, La Liga: All Access season two will be a winner!
